Growth for good: how Huma is scaling its business to improve patients’ lives

A strong start to 2023: Huma wins Tech Tour Growth50’s Health Award and is named the Financial Times’ fastest growing healthcare company in Europe 

Like most companies, growth is a primary focus at Huma. But for us, growth is about so much more than making money. 

Evidence shows our technology improves patient outcomes and experience, while helping health systems to become more efficient. One peer-reviewed study showed hospitals using our platform in Germany during Covid-19 had up to four times lower mortality rates, 40% shorter hospital stays and reduced patients’ need for intensive care.1

Health is something that touches all of us and we will all be patients at some point in our lives. It's only through growing fast that we can make a difference at a larger scale.

Receiving the Tech Tour Growth50 Health Award and being recognised as the number one fastest-growing healthcare and life sciences company in Europe are fantastic indicators that we are on the right track. But, this is just the beginning of what we can do. 

We spoke to our CFO and CSO Ingeborg Oie about Huma’s growth and what it takes to be a successful fast-growing tech company today.

What does the future look like for Huma?

“If we look back five years, we wouldn't imagine getting to where we are today, with 500 Huma(ns), more than 40 publications, 1.8 million active users and 3000+ hospitals and clinics using our technology.

Of course we have a detailed plan which translates our strategy into numbers, but I know from experience that even with the best plan it never plays out exactly like that. So looking ahead, I know for sure that any of my predictions could be precisely wrong. What's certain is that we're only at the beginning of the journey, and the number of lives we touch and our impact will grow strongly.”

What does it take to be a successful fast-growing tech company?

“There are three ingredients that are always needed to be a fast-growing tech company: great tech, talent and access to capital. In addition, you need perseverance and grit. This is definitely true in health tech. Healthcare systems do not change overnight and we know we need to create a network of happy and satisfied patients, healthcare professionals, partners and evangelists to bring the full benefit of digital technologies to care and research. This will take time, so we need to have patience and determination to see us through the journey.”

What did it mean to you to receive the Tech Tour Growth50 Health Award on behalf of Huma?

“It was special to receive the Tech Tour Growth50 award on behalf of Huma, as well as on behalf of our partners and investors who believed in us from before we won any awards or received such recognition. 

The ceremony took place on International Women's Day and according to a report by Tech Tour, only 8% of executive management in the Growth50 cohort are women. I am of a generation where I think gender is no longer an issue. Still, I am immensely grateful for all those who fought for women's rights throughout history, and enabled women, like me, to have such interesting jobs. 

As the next generation takes over, I believe the need for International Women's Day will disappear in the Western world. However, as much as I would have loved to rename International Women’s Day to International Huma(ns) Day, with those statistics, it seems we still have some work to do. I am proud to see that Huma is leading in gender diversity, and also for other dimensions of diversity, but we recognise we still have a lot more to do.”

Huma joins digital pioneers to advance health equity in care and research

Chief Executive Officer and Founder, Dan Vahdat, is returning to the annual World Economic Forum’s main conference where he will join a panel discussion devoted to improving care for non-communicable disease and tackling health equity. Accompanied by Chief Financial and Strategy Officer, Ingeborg Oie, Dan is looking forward to connecting with other attendees to explore how Huma’s digital health platform can make healthcare more equitable, and advances proactive, predictive care.

Dan will join the Digital Health Action Alliance panel at Davos to discuss Turning the Tide in Non-Communicable Disease Care Through Digital Health and Community Connection. Huma’s innovative remote patient monitoring platform enables broad patient recruitment, reduces reliance on in-person clinic visits and increases health system efficiency.
